about

Recorded in San Francisco under the auspices of Kush Arora & Señor Oz, with Pleasuremaker in attendance (on bass, but not on this track). This was a 3-man percussion jam session, featuring me along with 2 of the Bay Area's most prolific & talented percussionists (& myself). I know Baba Duru & Quique from many jams at the weekly Afrolicious party, & they're well-known by drummers & dancers alike, all over the globe. This recording session lasted a few hours & produced a lot of Gold! I just pulled this snippet because I felt it was a necessary addition of human/sweat/drum energy, & the world needs to hear more traditional drumming in this age of electronic music with no roots or cultural foundation. The Comparsa rhythm originates from the Congo region of Africa, & was popularized & expanded in Cuba since the mid-1800's, primarily at the carnavals of Santiago De Cuba. Baba Duru is a great ethnomusicologist,as well as drummer, & on this day he led Quique & I to this rhythm. This song is just a small snapshot of a larger drum-moment, & of a bigger tapestry of African rhythms that have been modernized in the Western world.
